MiteControl Project Livestream
The MiteControl project will be running a Livestream from 14:00 to 16:45 on 16 March 2022. This event is to host a series of demonstrations on practical red mite monitoring methods, best practices for cleaning during poultry houses during the empty period, and non-chemical methods trialed as part of the project for controlling red mite. The demonstrations will be livestreamed from the Experimental Poultry Centre in Belgium which will allow for these to be demonstrated in-situ within a laying hen house environment. There will be opportunities for questions and answers at the end of the session. The event will be focused on the practicalities of these topics and so will be very relevant for farmers, farm advisors, and veterinarians interested in red mite control.
EURCAW-Poultry-SFA's first scientific article
At the beginning of this year, the Centre is celebrating the publication of its first scientific paper as a result of the work carried out in Activity 3 in 2020. This study assessed the impacts of elevated platforms and straw bales on the welfare of fast-growing broilers reared at two different stocking densities.
This article named "Positive Effects of Elevated Platforms and Straw Bales on the Welfare of Fast-Growing Broiler Chickens Reared at Two Different Stocking Densities" is available here.
Existing training activities and materials for Rabbits
EURCAW-Poultry-SFA has evaluated in 2022 available training material with a focus on animal-based indicators for the prioritized area:
4. Rabbits on farm, with a focus on alternative housing systems.
Existing training activities and materials for Poultry
EURCAW-Poultry-SFA evaluated training material for poultry welfare assessment with a focus on animal-based indicators for the three prioritized areas:
1. Broiler chickens on farm
2. Laying hens in alternative housing systems
3. Stunning and killing
4. Turkeys on farm
A description of existing courses and materials in use at Better Training for Safer Food (BTSF), Member States or other levels (e.g., national and regional training courses) including information on objectives, content, and training materials was done.
Moreover, the poultry report highlights how training has evolved over time, from resource and management-based to animal-based evaluation of poultry welfare. Additionally, the report compares training and detects gaps on the existing animal-based indicators that have not been covered or have been only partially covered in the training materials that the EURCAW-Poultry-SFA could possibly address in the future.
